Jul 5, 2018For those of you who might not be aware, Stylish has recently been exposed to be collecting the internet history of people who use it. Because of this, I would recommend uninstalling it and using Stylus (a fork of Stylish that doesn't collect browsing data) instead. You can install it here, and adding styles from userstyles.org or pastebin works just like it did with Stylish.Posted in: Azurilland Information Database

At this time, Azurilland has just finished up a very fun escapade, simultaneously tackling the popular main series Pokémon games Diamond, Pearl, or Platinum. As that has come to a conclusion, we find ourselves facing the next decision: What game shall we play next? I have happily participated in the two previous playthroughs so far; before Sinnoh, we went through Black/White and had a blast. However, this time around, I see the leading option is not a main series game, but instead my favorite series in the entire video game world. The beloved spin off, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky, is winning the poll. One might think this is exciting for me. However, despite these being my favorite games of all time, I strongly believe they should not be played as part of a forum playthrough.
Again, I want to emphasize how much I love these games. Explorers of Sky in particular is a near perfect game in my eyes, with a phenomenal story, satisfying gameplay, and endless tasks to accomplish. It is my favorite game of all time, even looking beyond Pokémon. I believe everyone should give it a shot if they haven't already. It certainly isn't for everyone; some have complained about the gameplay being repetitive, boring, too difficult, or too "grindy." This is true, and not everyone will appreciate how tedious it can get. However, if one does appreciate this aspect of the game and gets invested in the story, it is absolutely worth a play through. For me, Explorers of Sky has engaged me so much that I have made a significant effort to learn as much about the details of the game as I can, even purchasing the official guidebook, and have written extensive guides on different aspects of it (not public).
So then, why shouldn't we play it collectively, as a forum? Why on earth would I be against that?
To explain my point thoroughly, it is important to look at the reasoning for these forum playthroughs. In the original thread explaining this event, it is said that the purpose of playing these games together is to replicate the phenomenon of playing a new Pokémon game at the same time and "comparing experiences." It also mentions battling, something that can still be done in older generation games because of battle simulators such as Pokémon Showdown. A lot of that is lost when playing Pokémon Mystery Dungeon.
One reason for this is that there is not actually much to compare and discuss. Mystery Dungeon is incredibly story-driven, and most of us have already played through the story anyway. Otherwise, the only difference in our experiences will be the Pokémon we play, the Pokémon we select as a partner, and possibly any third Pokémon we wish to recruit and use regularly. Anything else is incredibly minor. And because gameplay is not a major factor in Mystery Dungeon - for example, Pokémon's stats don't differ much like they do in the main series - there is not even too much of a difference in who you choose to play with either. Save for a few, the performance of all choices will be quite similar, especially before postgame. When playing through the main series games, one of the most enjoyable parts to me is planning our teams, comparing and discussing them as we go along, and being able to record the progress in those teams. There is also a lot more variation in the amount of items and moves one may choose to put on their teams during the main series; the effectiveness of items and moves in Mystery Dungeon is much more flat and not nearly as interesting to share. On top of this, there is not much interaction that is possible between players. Trainers relating to trainers... battling, even if it's through a simulator... attempting -Lockes or other challenges... none of that can really happen in Mystery Dungeon.
I will admit most of that is based on personal preference and what I believe these forum playthroughs should be about. However, it is not my only problem. The second issue is that, even if we disregard everything I just wrote, even if we embrace this and experience my favorite games ever collectively: doing it as part of this event will not do the games justice. Azurilland Moderator Bolin has stated in Discord, "Only gonna do the main story tho / Doing post game in 2 months would be a nightmare" and while I do not necessarily disagree, the main story does not even cover half of what these games are about, because again, it is very story-driven. After the credits roll, there is still so much story to go through, and so many dungeons to unlock and conquer. Completing the main story is only scratching the surface of these games, and spending an entire 2 months only doing that would be a waste of time when we could be going through a game that allows us to have our very own, special, customized, and more complete experience together.
To look on the bright side, this could also be seen as a break of sorts. We have played two main series games in a row, and maybe some people are tired of that. In that case it would be understandable to try something different. Either way, this is in no way trying to say choosing Mystery Dungeon is a bad idea; if it really does sound nice, it should be voted for. In fact, I ultimately wrote this because I half-jokingly asked if I should write an essay about it in Discord, because I genuinely do think a main series game would be much more fun, and people said yes. I bet they all thought I wouldn't.
Thank you for reading, I am happy to have spent an hour writing this instead of doing literally anything else. Love u guys.
