Another year, another March Madness tournament, and that means it's time to fill out a bracket! Can you correctly pick this year's champion?
Once again, I'll be hosting a bracket pool. Whoever scores the most points wins. Points are doubled for correct picks in each successive round. You do not need to know much (if anything!) about college basketball to participate; this is just a fun prediction activity and nobody is ever going to correctly predict every last match. Plus, it only takes a few minutes to fill out a backet.
All you need is an ESPN account since that's where I'm hosting the pool.
The group is here. The password to enter is "Passimian"
Good luck everyone!
Also, feel free to state which team(s) you're cheering for in the tournament! As for myself, Tennessee and Ohio State are back in this year, so I'm obviously pulling for them to do well. Maybe Creighton too since blue jay heheh
EDIT: You may likely need to create a bracket before it will let you join the group.
While not MM yet, I saw the end of yesterday’s Villanova/Providence game with my parents, grandparents and a few of their friends in the place we had dinner at. Going into overtime and then winning… If that’s anything to go by, they may have a shot at the top again, even after last year’s setback.
Hmm I don't know man, Providence wasn't the best team in the Big East and other than the year where they won it all Villanova has had plenty of early round exits recently, so we'll see. I just personally have a hard time picking them because of that.
While I'm here though, I'll talk about my own teams a bit and what I expect out of them:
Tennessee: Rick Barnes has done an amazing job with a team that was picked to finish 13th in the league. Plays good defense, has at least 6 players who can all shoot the ball (especially Admiral Schofield and Grant Williams, plus Lamonte Turner is one of the best sixth man players in D1). On a good day, they can beat anyone, knocking off Purdue early in the season and nearly doing the same to Villanova. Beating Kentucky 2/3 times has to count for something, too. Even with a lack of NCAA tournament experience, I think they can make a deep run in the tournament, but man the South Region is just full of teams that could also do that, so it won't be easy at all. If you want a dark horse candidate to win it all, though, here you go!
Ohio State: Also a team that wildly exceeded expectations. Honestly, I didn't think the roster had a shot at the beginning of the year, but first year head coach Chris Holtmann has done something really special, especially considering how down the Big Ten is this year (only 4 teams made the tournament, albeit all at high seeds). Didn't lose to Purdue or Michigan State, but I do see some problems down the line, as Penn State went 3-0 against them, while their nonconference results leave a lot to be desired (didn't beat a tournament team that was higher than a 16 seed :hmm:), so I have a hard time imagining them to go far. In fact, their second round matchup is likely going to be against Gonzaga, a team they lost badly to early in the season. South Dakota State in the first round also isn't a gimme win. Still, I have high hopes for OSU in future seasons for sure; I just don't think the ceiling is too high this year.
So as a silly boy who does not follow college basketball at all I have a mega asshole strat. I'm sure you've met someone else who does it too, if you've ever talked about brackets with people. It got me what I believe was either 2nd or 3rd last year, which is pretty good given I did not watch a single game of college basketball before March Madness starts. I'm not gonna let out my SICK STRATS but I think I'm going to do better than most people but not the best.
Heh, now I kinda feel bad about not making a bracket xP But man, Virginia Tech, I didn't see the end of the game but I know that they were leading against Alabama when I went to bed last night, so for them to have lost was quite the surprise to wake up to! And now Alabama is up against Villanova. Oh boy.
Man yesterday's games were all really fun. Lots of close games, Pac-12 going up in flames was hilarious, both my teams won (although, like I said, South Dakota State didn't make it easy - Mike Daum is a really good player), and 3s were flying all over, especially in the OSU/South Dakota State, URI/Oklahoma, and Buffalo/Arizona games.
Today should be another exciting day of basketball.
I'm not too into college basketball but since my family is such huge UK fans I follow it a tad but I always love watching like the end of season tournaments like the conference tournaments and march madness. I know you're a big Tennessee fan Jasper but I'm a little salty that we beat them in the SEC tournament but then got seeded lower. Like you said though they won 2/3 times so maybe that's why, not sure but oh well I hope both our teams do well.
We won yesterday and were supposed to have to play Arizona next but Arizona actually got stomped by Buffalo which I'm really shocked about. With Buffalo doing so well against Arizona it makes me pretty nervous about our game with them to be hones. Aside from all this Kentucky stuff though, I hope one day Morehead (my school I went to) will make it back into the tournament, seeing them beat Louisville that one year was great and I'd like to get to support my school again.
I think part of why we were seeded higher was because we won a share of the regular season title (along with Auburn) and we have a win over #2 seed Purdue. But yeah, I have Tennessee meeting up with Kentucky in the Elite 8; it'll be a fun game if we both get there!
So yeah, that was something last night, UMBC, the #16 seed, ousting Virginia, the #1 seed. For a first time event to happen in history, let alone with a decently sized lead, it's quite the task. No team is safe now lol. Unfortunately I won't get to watch any of the games today except the last three because I'll be working.
And Bijou sorry that Wichita State couldn't make it x_x
UMBC pulled off the greatest upset in the entire history of college basketball and I was so happy I witnessed it all happen that I couldn't do anything afterwards last night
Virginia is never going to live this down lmao
EDIT: Well damn, both of my teams are out. Ohio State fought hard against a much better opponent, and Loyola-Chicago had a fortuitous bounce on their last FG that earned them the win over Tennessee. Oh well, both teams are set up well for next year.
EDIT2: rip UMBC, those shots just couldn't land tonight. But you live on in all of our hearts
Also, fun fact: yesterday, while I had it on FXX for The Simpsons, one episode had the opening chalkboard gag being "If Villanova doesn't win we lose everything". I think it was in order with airing the episodes as they go, and that one aired two years ago, literally the night before Villanova won it all, but it's definitely good timing to come across that episode again. :P I am indeed hearing some predictions for them to repeat!
I think the way they're playing Villanova and Duke have to be the favorites out of the remaining teams. Both have been among the very few to have completely dominated their opponents. Same with Kentucky (ugh).
But idk man who knows what will happen in the next several days. If I had to pick one of the remaining teams it would probably be Texas Tech or one of the mid-majors.
EDIT: So one of these seeds: 3, 9, 9, 11 is going to the final. This tournament has already seen more madness than every previous one since 2011, jesus
