Hello once again, Azurillanders, and welcome to this month's Competitive Spotlight!
This month, we're looking at the ability Sheer Force. With this ability, any moves with secondary affects have their power boosted by 30%, at the cost of losing said secondary affect. For example: Flamethrower, which has 90 Base Power, will have that boosted to 117 but will lose its 10% chance to Burn.
Another handy caveat to Sheer Force is that the damage taken from Life Orb is mitigated, but you retain the power boost. Couple all of that together, with both the 30% boost from Sheer Force and the 30% boost from Life Orb, Flamethrower's Base Power would be boosted by a whooping 69%, making it a 144 Base Power move (only 6 Base Power weaker than Blast Burn) and the second most powerful Fire-type move in the game!

Sheer Force is an incredible ability that is learned by Pokémon such as the Totodile line, Nidoking, Nidoqueen, Braviary, Darmanitan, and Mega Camerupt.
For the sake of this Spotlight, I'd like to focus on Nidoking and Feraligatr, two of the best users of this ability.
Nidoking (M) @ Life Orb
Nidoking is a great Special user of the Sheer Force ability. Nidoking has a deep movepool, being able to learn moves like Flamethrower, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, and Sludge Wave, all of which benefit from the Sheer Force boost. For the item, Life Orb is the best choice, as Sheer Force users gain the boost, but do not take 10% from every attack.
Sludge Wave and Flamethrower are its main STAB, while Thunderbolt and Ice Beam can help take care of its counters, or bulkier Water- and Ground-types like Milotic or Gligar.
|Feraligatr @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature/ Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Ice Punch
Feraligatr is a great Physical user of the Sheer Force ability. Feraligatr was blessed with access to Liquidation, an 85 Power Physical Water-type move with a 20% chance to lower an opponent's Defense by one stage. This means that, thanks to Sheer Force, Liquidation has 110.5 Base Power, but no chance to lower Defense. This is now Feraligatr's best STAB move.
Dragon Dance is a fantastic move that boosts both Attack and Speed by one stage, which can make Feraligatr a terrifying sweeper if used correctly. Adamant and Jolly are its two best Natures, with Adamant boosting Attack, and Jolly boosting Speed, and both dropping Special Attack. Ice Punch is Feraligatr's best option for its counters, while Crunch is helpful for taking out bulky Psychic-type Pokémon that exist in the RU tier, like Meloetta and Necrozma.
Overall, Sheer Force is a great ability that gives a great power boost to a lot of different moves. While it does take away the secondary affects of all applicable moves, those rare chances of getting burns, paralysis and other affects aren't nearly as helpful as the power boost Sheer Force gives.
What do you guys think of Sheer Force? Do you have a favorite Sheer Force user? Maybe some sets you like to run.
