  • posted a message on Marriland's X Wedlocke discussion thread!

The original X Wedlocke (the one you linked to there) was so epic, and it feels great to finally have it all together in one place where it's easy to read through it. Anyone following this that hasn't read that challenge yet should probably do so, because wow, it's a really brutal story and also shows how unforgiving the game can be with these rules.

I also forgot to include it in the rules, whoops, but like the old X Wedlocke, this new X Wedlocke will NOT allow the Exp. Share either. Basically everything is the same, except I'm counting the Lapras on Route 12 as a free encounter so I'll technically have an extra encounter on Route 12 for this run compared to the last run.

Will you making walkthroughs for older generations(pokemon of course xD)?

On the new Marriland.com, probably not, though I will look into porting/rewriting the current generation ones. On Azurilland.com (once this current site/forums becomes rebranded), it will be up for the staff to decide, though I can say that one staff member has shown an interest in a walkthrough for a certain game, so perhaps more can be in the cards for the future — but it's not my decision.

Is this why the site has been really buggy lately?

    It's probably unrelated.

Why Marril? why not Weedleland? xD

When the sites split as well will my accounts be on both?

(sorry for language i am learning English, im from Croatia)

When the sites split, your account will just be on Azurilland. I probably won't have anywhere to register on the new Marriland (no forums).

Wonder Trade Wednesday has returned on Twitch! I'm sorry it starts late in Central Europe. It starts at 11:00pm (23:00) CEST and usually lasts until 1:00am CEST. (That's in the afternoon where I'm at; I can't do it any earlier :( )

To be honest, I wasn't happy with the transition in the first place.

Remember those cool backgrounds the old site had, the Oshawott and Tepig and Snivy backgrounds? I felt like that personality was lost in the transition.

I loved the old style - the walkthroughs were amazing and the tools were SUPER helpful! The Pokedex here sure lacks a lot of info, glad to hear that will be a new priority.

I am glad to hear you will be focusing more on what YOU want to do, also. :)

I'm not so sure if I'll go to azurilland.com, but I'll definitely be checking out the NEW Marriland.com!

I also miss a lot of those old features and I look forward to finding ways to bring some of them back. The alternate themes were always something I thought brought character to the old Marriland.com. But I have ideas for the new Marriland.com as well. I hope that Azurilland will also continue to make advancements, because I wish it the best, but it can't do it on its own!

The mascot Pokémon for Azurilland is likely to be Azurill. Related to Marill, but a newer, younger version. Of course Marill will still remain my mascot for YouTube and Twitter and such. The site/forums will now be separate from me, hence why they are now Azurilland, so hopefully that clears things up!

Just wondering (@Marriland of course), will you still post here like a "casual member" or just like not come on the forums at all besides watching everything?

I'd like to be present as a normal member. Maybe post in a few things here and there. I've gotta say it'll probably be a little more refreshing when it comes to posting because I focus on just posting in what I want to rather than what I have to, like for bugs and questions and stuff. ;)

So....... You're going to still be a member on Azurilland, just not an admin or anything?

And Marriland.com will basically become something like Serebii, right?

I will eventually be essentially just a normal member on Azurilland. Technically, at the moment, I do still have admin powers, but it's mostly just to assist the remaining administrators with technical help. I will not be responsible for any future administrative decision making or do anything staff-wise beyond providing feedback. It'll be up to them to make decisions collaboratively.

In 2016, Marriland.com will be a lot less like Serebii than it is now. The Marriland.com that you see right now, today, will be renamed and rebranded to Azurilland and Azurilland.com, including the forums, walkthroughs, tools, etc. When the domain name is released to me in 2016, I will no longer feature news or forums on the new version of Marriland.com, but will instead just focus on having a Pokédex, having tools, having walkthroughs, and keeping it extremely focused as a resource for Pokémon fans from around the world. What Azurilland.com becomes is up for the Azurilland community to decide.

Thanks for all of the comments, everyone. I'll leave talk of the translation for the future Marriland.com alone for now, since that's in the future and right now we should be focused on the present.

As for videos, yes, so it's clear, I will still be doing videos and I am still partnered with Curse through their YouTube program. If anything, I'll have more time to invest into making videos (though I'll warn you that October is proving to be a very busy month).

First of all, good luck with all your future work, I will definitely follow you. World of Pokemon would be a lot darker place without Marriland. Part of me is glad that you'll have complete control over your content and I'm really looking forward to it :) It's great from Curse that you're able to keep your name and domain, you have become a brand and it wouldn't feel right if they took that away.

Second of all, you said that it's your dream to make your content available in multiple languages. Do you plan to do that for the walkthroughs as well? Will you be writing articles about some more advanced mechanics, such as IVs, EVs, breeding, shiny hunting?

In any case, if you decide to translate to Croatian, I would be glad to help. Croatian community is somehow small, but there are a lot of kids that need help with the games and especially with those advanced stuff.

Once again, good luck with everything and see you at Youtube/new Marriland.com/Azurriland.com :)

The walkthroughs and guides are far less easy to translate than anything with language already in the game (like Pokémon names, move names, etc.). That's a huge project. If you'd like to help with translating that, I certainly wouldn't turn it down, but I know I can't realistically expect walkthroughs and guides to get translated as quickly as with shorter strings of text. That's why labels on the different tools will be a top priority.

Which of the seven selectable languages in the Gen VI games would a Croatian play? Because I would ideally like to have that "primary" language set for Pokémon names, moves, etc. for easy searching, but replace the labels on the tools themselves with the native language equivalents (like, whatever "Search for Pokémon" would be in Croatian).

Either way I would love to expand to cover as many languages as possible!

So, I am sort of confused... Will THIS site become Azurilland? Or will the forums be moved to the new Marriland.com? Will us members still be able to sign in and do stuff like stories and challenges? Is the new Marriland site going to be strictly a "tools and walkthrough" sort of site while this site will be just the forums?

Sorry if that is too many questions for you...

Think of it this way. THIS site will become Azurilland. The forums, log ins, posts, challenges, walkthroughs, news, Pokédex, etc. will all remain on THIS site (aka Azurilland).

Marriland.com will be a "new" site in 2016, built from scratch, and it will not offer forums or news posts but rather just resources.

I'll tweet about it on my Marriland Twitter account, but otherwise any news here is the responsibility of the Azurilland team. I was let go and it is no longer my job.

I'm talking about on your new site, at the beginning of the year. Is this something you will exclude from the site and just keep on your Twitter?

I will not make news a focus of the 2016 relaunch of Marriland.com. I may post about it on Twitter, YouTube, or Facebook, but I don't plan on having news be a priority and would rather focus on content/resources.

Aww, this is going to take some getting used to. And why the two L's? The confusion will be real!

Well, goodbye Mr. Marriland. And RIP Marriland forums.

It was debated for a bit, but these are still "new" forums (even though they'll literally have every single post and bit of content), so there's no need to tie them too strongly to the Marriland name. It's close enough, and that's good enough. Also "Azurriland" doesn't make as much phonetic sense — it sounds more like a-ZURR-rill-land instead of like how Azurill's name is.

    Quote from Laplandror»

So when the Azurilland forums become a thing, will the topics that are here currently still remain? Like the Weekly Polls and the Challenges forums? Or Fanfictions? I hope the ones that are present stick around.

The forums should remain 100% intact and functional. It's mostly just a rebranding rather than starting a new site. What you see today on Marriland.com should all be here in one month on Azurilland.com. Links will change, but that's about it.

    tl;dr version

    • I'm no longer working for Curse or an admin here, but I will still do YouTube videos as a partner for Curse
    • They're cool and letting me keep the Marriland name and eventually the Marriland.com domain name (January 2016)
    • Azurilland.com is a rebrand of Marriland.com and will probably contain everything on the site for now
    • The Marriland Forums will now be known as the Azurilland Forums
    • The transition to Azurilland.com will hopefully be in mid-November

    Other Notes

    • You can post here your thoughts, feedback, concerns, farewells (I'll probably be around for a bit longer, don't worry), etc.
    • There will probably be a pinned thread (sticky) going up in the Forum Feedback forum pertaining to Azurilland, so be on watch for that.
    • The Bug Reports forum will eventually be reduced to just a single pinned thread (sticky) in the Forum Feedback forum, since development time investment is uncertain.

How's it going, everyone? Marriland here.
    (tl;dr ver. in 2nd post)

For the past 3½ years, I've worked for Curse, a company focused on gaming resources, content, videos, and tools. Over these years, several of Curse's innovations, such as Gamepedia and Curse Voice, have taken off and done very well, and Curse's YouTube program, Union for Gamers, has grown into an incredibly solid YouTube partner network (MCN, in technical terms). It's been exciting seeing these changes over the 3½ years I've been a part of the company.

Unfortunately, while I had high hopes and expectations to grow Marriland.com in a similar manner, it did not pan out, and that is why, effective today, I have been let go from my position at Curse and will no longer be responsible for the site as you currently know it. Curse has recently undergone some large corporate restructuring for long-term growth at the company, which is exciting, but I am not a part of that picture anymore. However, before you get up-in-arms about this news, I'd really appreciate if you continued reading to see why this can be a good thing for all of us, and how I still respect Curse despite this set back. Also, understand that these are my own words, they don't reflect Curse's official opinion or views, but they also weren't vetted or filtered by Curse just so they sounded good or something.

First, I want something to be very, very clear, which is perhaps the most relieving news out of this whole thing (at least for me, personally)...

Curse has allowed me to continue using the Marriland name, brand, and eventually the Marriland.com domain name

One of my biggest fears was that I would be shut out from the name I first created over 15 years ago. 15 years. That's right, Marriland.com was founded in the year 2000. That's a LONG time ago in internet terms! My identity online has been Marriland for a good portion of this time, especially after 2003, when the Marriland Forums were founded, but absolutely in 2007 when my YouTube channel took off.

It would be sad to lose the domain name and website, but absolutely terrible if Curse were a company that decided, "Hey, sorry, pal, but the name 'Marriland' is ours now and you can't use it!". I'm not a lawyer, but I could absolutely see that being within their rights to do so, and it would have been a nasty, terrible fight for everyone, it would have gotten the community angry and upset, it would have made things incredibly uncertain for me, personally, going forward, and it would have also reflected poorly on Curse.

Curse is not that kind of company, though, at least not to me. They have been incredibly respectful throughout this whole process. I can't express how grateful and relieved I am to know that we will continue to have a good relationship. I will continue to be one of their YouTube partners and will continue to wish them the best.

    What happened with Marriland.com, then?

When Marriland.com was founded and as it grew over the years, its primary focus was on useful tools, such as the Pokédex and the Team Builder, and on walkthroughs. It was not originally intended to be a news site. My vision for the site was innovation and creativity. When Marriland.com relaunched through Curse in December of 2012, they placed a much stronger emphasis on news and articles than the site had previously had.

Speaking solely from my own view, and not from Curse's, I believe that there was a stark contrast in the direction that had taken Marriland.com compared to the direction that Curse wanted to take Marriland.com. My expectations were that there would be more development time into the different tools and resources on the site, while I'm assuming their expectations were that the site would focus more on updates (not strictly news) and walkthroughs, and to constantly have new things up on a basis more frequent than Pokémon's actual news schedule.

It may have simply been a matter of trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. I'd done a good job running Marriland my way before the transition, but I may not have done as good of a job in their minds after the transition running it the way they wanted it run as opposed to the way I had been running it before; likewise, there were several things that I requested more emphasis on, such as development of things like the Team Builder (reminder: all development of tools and stuff is not something I have had control over since the transition in 2012 and is handled by the development team, which also handles all development on all of the other Curse sites), but they weren't prioritized with the same priority I felt they deserved.

That's how it goes. It's unfortunate, but rather than dwelling, we're moving past it and are looking to rebuild these successes by separating, allowing me the freedom to program my own tools at my own pace again while also continuing creating videos on YouTube, and allowing them a chance to keep the community element of the Marriland Forums together while eventually focusing on a more community-run Pokémon fansite and forums than when I was at the helm.

That's why I think it's important to announce...

    Azurilland.com and the Azurilland Forums

Keeping forums operational is no easy task. It's something that I, personally, and plain and simple unable to do. If any of you reading remember the days before Curse, you'll remember the dreaded "MarriLag", which was due to the forums being way too large on phpBB3 without any finetuning, and I had no clue how to finetune it all while still juggling multiple servers and the main website. Yeah, it wasn't fun. Not only that, but so many forums and sites are being hacked nowadays, and thankfully the Marriland Forums and Marriland website has been A-OK during the time on Curse (the only time it has ever been hacked was in 2005, I think, due to a vulnerability in phpBB2).

Although I'm sure a lot of you don't feel the current forum system on Marriland is perfect, at least it doesn't take 20 seconds to load pages and at least it has been reliably secure. That's awesome, and that's why the Marriland Forums will not be coming with me to the relaunched Marriland.com. They will no longer be called the Marriland Forums as of mid-November.

The current plan is that everything on the site now will remain as it is, but it will be renamed to Azurilland. The website will be at Azurilland.com. The Marriland Forums will become the Azurilland Forums. No posts will be lost or anything like that; it should all still be here.

We went with the Azurilland name to stay in the Marill family. It's hatching from a new egg and will eventually grow big and strong. The name will gradually be adopted throughout the site over this next month until it is eventually moved to Azurilland.com, sometime in November. We'll start calling these forums the Azurilland Forums before the transition and will work towards updating the names of pages throughout the site in this time.

I will also no longer have any official role or duty on Azurilland. I'll maintain a presence on the Azurilland Forums for the foreseeable future, but I will not be writing news updates and will have no official moderator or administrator powers (I'll assume the "Mastermind" role, sort of as a throwback to the old Dark Mastermind days that have been long since forgotten by most, but not all). The Azurilland Forums will be left to the current administrator and moderator team, who are all onboard for the transition and ready to grow the Azurilland Forums for the community.

What's next for Marriland and Marriland.com?

I'll be shifting my focus to making videos on YouTube, remaining a partner through Curse's Union for Gamers partnership program. You'll still be able to find me on Twitter as @Marriland as well.

When Azurilland.com goes live in mid-November, Marriland.com will redirect all traffic to Azurilland.com until the end of the year. At the start of 2016, Marriland.com will be completely under my control again, but it will be rebuilt from scratch. (I may carry over the walkthroughs; Curse and Azurilland would retain permissions to host the existing walkthroughs.)

My vision for the new Marriland.com is to focus on having a good Pokédex, useful tools like the Team Builder, and Walkthroughs. I will not be doing news or other random updates on the new Marriland.com. It will be simplified, focused, and geared towards Pokémon players and Marriland fans. Additionally, I plan on having the Pokédex and Tools like the Team Builder available in multiple languages. My dream for the new Marriland.com is a truly international site that can be accessible for Pokémon fans all around the globe. Having tools and resources available in someone's native language is substantially more convenient than having to memorize both the native language name for a Pokémon in addition to the English language name for it.

Oh yeah, it will be mobile-friendly (mobile-focused, really!) as well. ;) I encourage Curse to take time into improving these features on Azurilland as well, but that will be up to them, not to me.

    So That's It

I hope this does not come across as too upsetting. It's definitely been quite a ride, but I believe strongly that it will all continue to work out in the end!

I look forward to seeing what I'm able to do with the, uh, well, I-don't-even-know-WHAT-version of Marriland.com next year, and I look forward to seeing what Azurilland becomes in time as well!

Thanks for reading, everyone, and I'll see you... uh... next time?! Yeah!

The fact that this was even an issue speaks volumes about this sites servers.

How is it an issue with the servers? It could equally be an issue with your posts. People aren't required to reply to every post in every thread, and may not do so instantly. Just because someone isn't replying directly to your posts right away doesn't indicate there's actually something wrong with the site.

Of course you could also go in to people's threads to give them responses as well. It takes at least two to have a conversation, so you can be a part of it, and if someone isn't replying right away (give it time), find other threads and topics that you can contribute to.
