So, it's time for me to fix the fact that I never finish challenges. Usually, I either give up or I lose, because I'm bad at Pokémon challenges, let's face it. But this time, I'm going to follow through! At least, I hope I do. College might get in the way. So, I'll be starting this challenge and one more that I haven't decided on yet, which will be either on a Gen 5 game, Silver when it comes out on Virtual Console, or Pearl.
As some of you might know, Marrilland started a Sapphire Rainbow Wedlocke, and I really wanted to do one too (especially as an acearo girl!) However, I modified the nature rules a little so there's more variety! So, here are the rules:
1. Any Pokémon that faints is considered dead, and must be boxed or released.
2. You may only catch the first Pokémon on a route. (I am using Dupes Clause and Shiny Clause.)
3. Nickname all Pokémon. My nickname theme is galaxy! So that means names are based on planets, star names, galaxy names, and anything else that fits the theme!
4. All Pokémon are paired together, and parings are based on nature. (I randomly generated my list.) Here's what that means:
- Pokémon who have a jolly, calm, modest, naive, or docile nature are straight, and are paired with a Pokémon of the opposite gender. If for whatever reason, I catch a genderless Pokémon and it has one of these natures, I'm going to say that the Pokémon is unusable, because there's no way to pair it.
- Pokémon who have a lax, mild, naughty, relaxed, or hasty nature are gay/lesbian, and are paired with a Pokémon of the same gender. To be fair, I'm going to say that if I catch a genderless Pokémon with one of these natures, the Pokémon is still unusable.
- Pokémon who have a gentle, rash, lonely, quirky, or careful nature are considered bisexual, and can be paired with male or female Pokémon, but not genderless Pokémon. Genderless Pokémon can have this sexuality, but they have to find a pan partner. (Bisexuality is a little more nuanced than this, but I'm doing this for the sake of simplicity.)
- Pokémon who have a serious, hardy, sassy, adamant, or quiet nature are pan, and can be paired with any gender. Obviously, genderless Pokémon can have this one.
- Pokémon with an impish, bashful, brave, timid, or bold nature are considered ace, and they can only be paired with other aces.
(I forgot about switching rules, so I'll add them in now.)
Pokémon can only switch within their own pair. A non-Ace Pokémon can switch to an Ace (like in Marriland's challenge), but the Ace Pokémon has to finish the battle alone, even if they have a partner.
5. If the first encounter I run into isn't compatible, I can skip it, like in a regular Wedlocke.
6. I can't deposit Pokémon in the PC.
7. Have fun, and try to succeed!
I'll post the first part tomorrow, because it's late, and I have class tomorrow. See you then!
Hehe! I didn't see the start of Marriland's Rainbow Wedlocke given that I was away that weekend, but cool to see that you're following in his footsteps! Best of luck with this, sounds like it could be a mess to go through. Gonna hold you to actually getting back to this one haha
So, before we start, I read the new rules. Are we allowed to post three challenges by ourselves now, or is it still two solo and one collaboration? I'm not sure, so I wanted to ask.
Pendraflare: Yeah! Hopefully I can get a bit of a schedule worked out so I can do this consistently!
@Pikuhana: I agree, this is a really interesting and challenging Nuzlocke!
@Dark_Greninjaman: It definitely will be interesting to see who gets farther and what happens in each one!
And now, it's time for part one! This covers from the very beginning of the game to the end of the Trainer's School, so this is kinda long.
Valentine was a quiet kid. He didn't talk much, and he didn't really have friends, especially now that he moved here, to Alola. And his mom knew that. She knew he didn't like talking, or interacting with others.
So why, exactly, did she send him off with this strange guy who didn't have enough decency to put a shirt on who called himself a professor?
"You'll love it here, Cousin! There's so many Pokémon, so many people, and a lot of cool things you'll find in Alola! Are you excited?"
"Yeah..." Valentine said quietly. It wasn't a lie, he was excited to be here, but this Kukui character rubbed him the wrong way, and it wasn't just due to his lack of clothing. He just seemed...too happy; it was almost like he was putting on a facade. And he was excited about getting a Pokémon, but he was suspicious of this supposed Kahuna Kukui kept mentioning.
"Wait, where is he?"
"The Kahuna was supposed to meet us here, but I don't see him. Maybe he's up there, on the trail. I'll stay down here, so if he comes down here, I'll see him. You go check up there, okay, Cousin?"
Valentine hesitated for a bit. He was a little worried, but if he did find the Kahuna, then he could get his Pokémon faster.
Valentine trudged up the steps, when he saw a young woman, talking quietly to herself. Then she went up the trail. I wonder who she is....
Valentine followed her up the trail, and heard her whispering to herself again. When they finally reached the top, he saw a Pokémon fly out of her bag, and quickly be attacked by Spearow.
That's when that girl, whom Valentine had been following for a while, turned around and saw him.
"Hey, you! Please...go save Nebby! I don't want...I don't want to go out on that bridge."
Well. This is awkward, Valentine thought. But I can't leave her here and not help. That's something only a jerk would do. Besides, she might be the Kahuna....
So Valentine, against his better judgement, walked onto the bridge and shielded the small Pokémon.
He wasn't sure what happened next. One moment, he was falling, then, he was back next to that girl, looking at a mysterious orange Pokémon, and holding an odd stone in his hand.
"That was Tapu Koko! He must have recognized you as worthy!" Kukui explained. Valentine and the girl he met earlier, Lillie, were back, and so was the Kahuna.
"Now, child, it is time for you to get your Pokémon!" Hala, the Kahuna, said, tossing out three Pokémon. The first was a small owl, the second a kitten, ant the third was a blue seal. "Choose one!"
Valentine looked back and forth. He reached out to the kitten.
"So you want Litten, then?"
Valentine nodded yes in response.
After a long, drawn out ritual and battling an odd kid named Hau, Valentine was finally home, and was eating dinner in his room.
"What's your name?"
Valentine jumped. He didn't recognize that voice. Where did it even come from? He looked down, only to see that the Litten that he had received earlier was speaking.
"Uh...Valentine. That's my name."
"Ah. A fitting name. I am Jupiter."
"Jupiter is a planet, not a Pokémon."
"And a valentine is a thing, not a person. Point is, I need to talk to you about something."
"What?" Valentine asked. It was weird enough that he was talking to his new Litten, but now the Pokémon was making demands? This was definitely not right.
"Well, you've heard stories about Nuzlocke, right?"
Valentine nodded. Some were stories of a person named Nuzlocke, others were of a Pokémon named Nuzlocke, and still others talked about a disease that was prominent in humans. Either way, it involved Pokémon dying and special restrictions.
"Well, they're true. All of them. Not that you have a disease or anything, but you do have to deal with a special form of Nuzlocke: the Rainbow Wedlocke."
"Okay...? Can you explain?"
Valentine was dreading the next night. His mom had told him that he had to face Hau, and fight him for a ceremony. First off, he didn't want to fight Hau. Hau...wasn't the kind of person that Valentine liked. Much like Kukui, he was too happy, and too easygoing. Second, he was worried about what Jupiter told him.
"If I faint, I die. Same with other Pokémon you catch. The Poké-Gods decided that the 'new kid' would have to go through this challenge, and told me and the other two starters. Also, you have to pair me with a Pokémon. Luckily, unless you find an ace or a Pokémon that's only into girls, finding a partner for me will be easy."
What if Hau managed to knock Jupiter or any other Pokémon I catch out? That...that'd be awful.
But he had to go. He dragged his feet to Route 1 when Kukui told him to come, and he didn't even pay attention when Kukui taught him how to catch Pokémon. Finally, Kukui left Valentine alone.
"You want me to catch you a partner, right?"
"Right. And as long as the Pokémon isn't ace, a straight guy, or a lesbian, everything will be fine."
Except it wasn't fine, because that Pikipek that Valentine caught was ace.
"How am I going to fight Hau now?!" Valentine said, sighing.
"Jupiter can do it. He's a pretty buff guy," Mercury, the ace Pikipek that he caught said, flying beside Valentine.
"Yeah. It'll be really simple. Don't worry about it."
They arrived at the village center Valentine was at yesterday, and Valentine quickly saw Hau, who was raring to go.
"Let's get this over with."
"Fine, you two were right, Mercury," Valentine said, following Lillie down to Kukui's lab. He had run into a Slowpoke earlier, but accidentally knocked it out. So it was just him and his two Pokémon.
"Oh, not again. I'm going to have to patch the roof and buy the Professor a new coat, aren't I...?" Lillie muttered, opening the door to the lab.
"Oh, Lillie and Valentine! Just the two people I wanted to see! Hold on a second..." Kukui said, grabbing a Poké Ball and an odd looking device. He released the Pokémon from its ball, and then held up the device. Suddenly, the Pokémon merged with the device, and Kukui gave it to Valentine.
"This is a Rotom Dex! It allows you to access the Alolan map and the Pokédex, and even talks to you! Also, I need to talk to you about the island challenge too. Give me a second-"
"Kukui! Lillie! Valentine! Hey!" Hau yelled, jumping through the doorway.
Oh please, not him again....
And then he was following Lillie again, this time to the Trainer's School.
"I...I've been following you around a lot, huh, Lillie?"
"Hm? I...I guess you have."
They walked into the Trainer's School, where Kukui and the principal were waiting.
"Are you ready? You need to beat four of my students in order to continue on," the principal said.
Valentine looked around for a patch of grass to search for new Pokémon. Unfortunately, while there was some grass, there was a Youngster guarding it. And Valentine knew he had to fight that kid. Luckily, it was a quick battle; Ember decimated the Pokémon the Youngster used.
"Time to get a new Pokémon!" Valentine said. Hopefully it'll pair with Jupiter or Mercury...
He walked into the grass, and found an Alolan Grimer. It was easy enough to catch him, too.
"Whoa, slow down there, champ! I'm Neptune. How about you?"
"I'm Valentine. Now-"
"You don't have to go so fast. I'm a pretty mild guy. Tell me about yourself. Or...you could tell me about that handsome fella behind you," Neptune said, indicating towards Jupiter.
"This means he's into guys, right?"
"Or he could just be into me. That happens sometimes. But in any case, I think we found my partner," Jupiter said with a purr.
"Finally done..." Valentine muttered. He had beaten every single Trainer, and now he could-
"Would Valentine come to the Principal's office, please?"
"No, you aren't," Mercury said, smirking a little. Valentine glared at her, and she shrugged. "It's true, though."
"The Principal probably wants to fight you," Neptune said. "I overheard that she does that pretty often."
"You should probably heal everyone up. It's bad to go into a fight unprepared," Jupiter said.
"You mean you and Neptune. I don't think it'd be good if I participated in this one," Mercury said, raising what looked like an eyebrow.
"Right. Well, I didn't want to exclude you or anything."
Valentine was definitely a little worried about this fight. That worry turned to dread when he realized that no, Poison Gas doesn't work on Magnemite, and Neptune was at 3 HP.
"Neptune, switch out with Jupiter!" Valentine yelled. He was shaking. Hopefully, Ember would carry him through the battle, like it had for the rest of the ones he had fought.
Jupiter knocked out Magnemite just fine, and then Meowth came out. Ember was working just fine, but that Meowth was doing way too much damage with Bite.
Then, the miracle hit: Jupiter landed a critical hit with Ember.
"One more time! You should survive this last turn!"
And Jupiter did, with 2 HP to spare.
Before the Principal could even congratulate Valentine on his win, he ran out of the school, to the Pokémon Center, his legs barely carrying him there.
Intro scene is very long
Chose Litten, named him Jupiter (Pan)
Caught Mercury on Route One (Ace)
Both of the Hau battles went okay.
Accidentally knocked out my encounter between my house and the lab
Time to heal up in the Pokémon Center!
And to the trainer’s school we go!
Got the experience share, leaving it on for Mercury
Trainer’s school encounter was a male Grimer, which hopefully I can pair with Mercury or Jupiter. Named him Neptune. He is…mild, which means he is gay, or into guys! So he and Jupiter are paired (Jupiter is male)!
Got the quick claw!
Beat all four trainer's at the trainer's school. Got work up!
Time for the teacher battle!
Starting with Neptune, let's hope I can take Magnemite…
And I'm Paralyzed, and Poison Gas doesn't work on Magnemite, so I'm switching to Jupiter. Good job Jupiter! He didn't get paralyzed! I knock out Magnemite with Scratch. Embered the Meowth and healed, and then embered again. Jupiter survived with 2 hp! Got some great balls!
Graduation from trainer's school! Yeah!
And we're going to end it here!

Question: How do you like the story and the structure so far? Things will probably be more interesting later on, when there's not as many cutscenes, so sorry if it was a bit boring this time.
Aw, it's too bad you didn't get that Slowpoke. It's one of my favorites!
This is such an interesting variation on the Wedlocke because of the extra limitations on who can be paired. I haven't been able to watch any of Marriland's progress yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes for both of you! C:
I'm enjoying the story so far! It'll be fun to get to know the Pokemon you use on your team. And to see how Valentine steps up to the challenge he's facing.
Also wanted to say that it's great to see you back around here again! I had been wondering how you were doing since we hadn't heard from you in a little while. Here's hoping you stick around and your playthroughs go well! :D
@Dino: I'm glad you're enjoying it! I'm doing pretty well; college started recently and I'm really enjoying my classes! I've been really busy though, because I'm technically taking six different classes.
Part Two (Covers through the Illima battle)
After Valentine healed up his Pokémon, he left the Pokémon Center, and Lillie was waiting outside for him.
"H-hey, Valentine!" Lillie said. "I need to show you Hau'oli City! Follow me!"
Valentine reluctantly followed her. I wanted to take a break before we went anywhere. Oh well....
The two kids walked side by side, the moon shining down on them. Both of them were silent, until...
"Valentine, I, um...I really admire you. I don't normally like Pokémon battles, but...you always seem to have so much fun when you're battling."
"Valentine! Lillie! Over here!" Hau called out, waving the two over. Lillie ran over, while Valentine slowly walked over, not really wanting to talk to Hau.
"What is it, Hau?" Lillie asked. Hau pointed to a nearby building.
"That's the visitor's center! I heard that they're giving out a special gift to anyone who has a Rotom Dex, and since Valentine has one, I think we should go see what it is!"
"I guess we can do that..." Valentine muttered.
After getting a camera installed on Valentine's Rotom Dex and taking some pictures, Valentine went further into Hau'oli City. He saw Lillie in front of a clothing store. She saw Valentine and then...
"Oh, Valentine! Um, I need to go...somewhere. Sorry! I'll see you later!" Then, Lillie ran off, blushing. That's weird...
Then, he walked into the clothing store and was overjoyed at what he saw in the men's section.
See, for whatever reason, Valentine's favorite color was...pink. He just liked it, he didn't care that it was "girly", and he was glad that this clothing store had plenty of pink clothing. A pink polo, pink pair of capris, and pink crew socks; it was wonderful!
Valentine looked around to make sure that nobody was in sight. While he wasn't shy about admitting he liked pink, he still didn't want to be judged right off the bat for his ensemble.
...Unfortunately, a Rattata did see Valentine's incredibly pink getup, and laughed from across the way.
"Young man! Why are you wearing so much pink?! It is unbecoming of a young man to wear all pink."
"Says the weak guy with a stupid mustache," Jupiter spat back, hissing at the Rattata.
"I think that pink is a fine color for a young man!" Mercury chirped, sticking her beak up in a snooty manner.
"It suits him," Neptune said, agreeing with the other two Pokémon.
Thanks, guys... "Who are you, anyway?"
"I? I am Pluto! And I would love a lovely lady for a partner. Unfortunately, I don't think that Pikipek of yours likes me."
"Of course I don't! Not only am I not attracted to men, you, sir, are incredibly rude and self-centered!"
"Unfortunately, I think it'd be for the best to let him go with us. I only have three Pokémon right now, and I'm going to need a full team for the road ahead," Valentine said, mildly irritated that they had to bring Pluto along. "I heard that there's some Team Skull grunts in town, and I'm not sure how strong they are, but it might be good to train up."
"I think we're good now! Bring on the grunts!" Mercury said.
"You do realize that it's probably going to be Jupiter and Neptune fighting the grunts, right?" Valentine asked.
"W-what?!" Mercury spluttered. "But I can fight too!"
"You don't have a partner, Mercury. It'd be really hard for you to fight alone," Valentine said. "The same goes for Pluto."
"At least you'll be good if we need a backup! You're pretty tough!" Neptune said, trying to cheer her up.
The party walked down to the Marina, and there, standing alone, was an odd young man.
"Hello! You were that fellow who graduated from the Trainer's School recently, correct? I'm Illima. I'm the trial captain for this island. Now, I need to talk to you about-"
"Yo, yo! Team a Skull is here to take Pokémon and do some battlin'!"
Illima and Valentine turned around. "You take one, and I'll take the other," Illima said. Valentine nodded in agreement.
And thus, a battle started. The grunt threw out a Zubat, while Valentine threw out Neptune. "I think I might have trained a bit too much..." Valentine said as one Bite from Neptune knocked out the Zubat.
"Whoa, whoa! Not fair at all! Let's get out of here!" the grunt yelled, and both ran out of the Marina.
Illima sighed. "That's Team Skull for you. They...aren't always the smartest people. Anyway...I was about to ask you if you would like to battle."
Valentine shrugged. What could be the harm?
And then the second battle started. Yungoose and Neptune, respectively, were thrown out onto the field. Neptune did a lot of damage with Poison Touch and Bite, and Yungoose was out in two turns. Then, Illima threw out Smeargle. Again, due to Neptune's powerful Bite, Smeargle was knocked out in two turns.
"Ah! You have trained your Pokémon well I see!"
"I was expecting the grunts to be...a lot tougher, so I trained a lot."
"Well, there's no problem with that! I'll see you at my trial on Route Two later, whenever you're ready!" Illima said. Then, he walked off in a dramatic fashion.
"Weird guy..." Mercury said. Valentine nodded in agreement.
- Went into Haoli city
- Got the Poké Finder
- New clothes! Finally!
- Caught Alolan Rattata in Hau'oli City, named him Pluto (Modest/Straight)
- Trained for the grunts and Illima
- Knocked both of them out really easily
Jupiter the Litten
Level 13, Male, Sassy (Pan), Hates to Lose
Scratch - Ember - Leer - Lick
Paired With: Neptune
Neptune the Grimer
Level 12, Male, Mild (Gay), Capable of taking hits
Pound - Poison Gas - Disable - Bite
Paired With: Jupiter
Mercury the Pikipek
Level 12, Female, Brave (Ace), Proud of its power
Peck - Growl - Echoed Voice - Rock Smash
Paired With: Nobody Yet!
Pluto the Alolan Rattata
Level 9, Male, Modest (Straight), Somewhat Vain (Isn't that a contradiction?)
Tackle - Tail Whip - Quick Attack - Focus Energy
Paired With: Nobody Yet!
So, before anyone gets mad, I have nothing against straight people, Pluto (the one straight Pokémon in the party) just so happens to be a very rude Pokémon.
Anyway, training Pokémon when you keep running into Abras is not fun, just in case anyone was curious. Also, there was this one Rattata I ran into that had a really strong Quick Attack for whatever reason, and I had to switch into Jupiter because that Rattata was going to kill Neptune if I wasn't careful! I...totally thought Illima's Smeargle was Lv. 13, not Lv. 10, so I was way overleveled for that fight! Also, if any of you need music to listen to while training, "Tiptoe" by Imagine Dragons is a pretty good training song!
Well, I will say that you sound good at lumping things up into shorter updates and covering as much as you can. I hope that Smeargle wasn't too big a hurdle, because we all know how much of a jerk that thing is!
I haven't seen all of what Marriland has done in his challenge so far, but this is a cool little idea. I didn't think that he would want to do a gay variant after discussing why he wasn't a fan of the idea way back, but it's cool to see this catching on. Best of luck to the rest of this! (And your overload of college classes.) I'm excited to see how well this goes.
