Hello! It’s time to continue my 7 generation squadlocke run with the second game: HeartGold. You may be asking "What is a squadlocke?" A squadlocke is a wedlocke variant which has all the same rules except instead of three teams of two pokemon on your team, you had two teams (or squads) of three pokemon. In order to keep the selection constraints in place, I will be using a male and a female squad. I will be playing yellow, heartgold, pearl, Alpha Sapphire, black, y, and moon. I will post a new thread for each game rather than one long thread. I will have some general rules and then game specific rules.
1-3. Standard Nuzlocke Rules
I cannot box any pokemon without killing them. I must fight with what I have
gender clause. At the start we will fill the starter's squad and then the other one before sending to pc. No limit, I don't know enough to abuse it.
Valid encountered Genderless pokemon will be assigned a gender on an alternating basis, beginning with the opposite of the starter. (so a male froakie means female solrock and then a male next time. This is to get more pokemon I can use)
Doupes clause for pokemon in this run-through and any previous team member entering the elite four.
Gift pokemon and shiny pokemon count as encounters in places where an encounter is impossible. For instance the lapras on route 12 counts as route 1 in Kalos. This lets me get more encounters (my point is to have fun, not really be challenged), without shiny hunting forever. The exception is the starters, which will always count for the home location.
If I wipe, I am allowed to train up anyone in the pc.
Challenge begins when poke balls available.
I cannot use legendaries. If forced to capture I can get a 2nd pokemon from the nearest possible location. If not forced to capture I must knockout.
I will only be going through Johto to beat the elite four the first time. Just beat Kanto.
Lake of Rage should be automatic encounter of Gyarados, but that is locked out due to one being on the elite four team in Yellow. So I will count that as my encounter anyway but release it.
The final 6 from Yellow (dupes clause from here on out): Magikarp, zubat, bulbasaur, doduo, cubone, and rattata
New Bark Town: Celtics the female chikorita
Violet City: Falcons the male Togepi (gift)
Route 29: Owls the female hoothoot
Route 46: Avalanche the female geodude
Route 30: Spiders the male spinarak
Route 31: Packers the male bellsprout
Route 32: Lightning the male mareep
Caves and other:
Sprout Tower: Raiders the male gastly
Ruins of Alph:
Cliff Edge Gate:
Lake of Rage:
@mudkipz: Thanks for the wish of fun! I usually enjoy these, even if I complain a bit in my updates...
Have option to skip most tutorials…why did this disappear? (I feel like I may ask that question more than once)
Named character after my son.
Got hit by a Marill. It follows a trainer…why did this disappear?
Number ends in 3. Grass it is!
New Bark Town: Chikorita named Celtics. (naming theme is sports teams) It is female! So females first filled. (lv 5)
The town: the one tutorial we can’t skip. Got running shoes and turned them permanently on…why did this (okay, I’ll stop. But seriously)
Vs ??? (Silver): I was 2 levels up. He only got one tackle off, and a couple leers. I win!
He’s going to be the best trainer in the world. Dude, I just beat you. Calm down.
There was an emergency…I was accused of stealing a pokémon (which I kinda did)…delivered an egg. Got pokeballs! Challenge starts now.
Route 29 is...a hoothoot. Caught without weakening. Female named Owls. (lv 2)
Route 46 is…not a rattata. Dupes based on yellow. See heartgold rules. A geodude finally shows up (only other option at night. Woulda been hoothoot in morning, but that’s not an issue right now). Female. Named Avalanche. (lv 3)
Cherrygrove is not gettable yet, but is later so we wait.
Playing at night so only option left on Route 30 is spinarak. Male needed now. Was first encounter anyway! Caught and named Spiders. (lv 2)
Saved for the night. Will challenge Joey and his top level rattata next week!
Picking up in day. Trained Avalanche to 6 and Owls to 4 before challenging Joey. Can’t be too carful with top percentage rattata.
Vs Joey: Avalanche vs Rattata: I was pretty worried about his famous pokémon, but Avalanche got a crit on turn two to take it out…whew. Close one there. (obviously this is meant in humor)
Route 31 is…Bellsprout. Only had one pokeball (oops). Managed to get it to the red and asleep though, so that one worked. Named Packers.
Technically I could get a dunsparce in dark cave, but it’s 1% and I can’t be bothered.
Trade for Onix considered but thanks to the opinions of the Challenger’s Clan forum group I was persuaded against it. Instead I attempted to add Route 32 before the likely gastly from Sprout Tower.
Told some random dude I wanted to be a psychic. Really I like being a Vetran but that’s not an option.
Someone in Violet city has a naming scheme of her favorite foods. I seem to remember another person naming things after foods…
Obtained HM 06. Taught it to Avalanche as she was the only one who could learn it.
Almost forgot to stop by the mart for pokeballs. I found one so I would have had a chance, but still…Got 14 (and a Premier Ball).
Route 32 is…a mareep. Caught it in the Premier Ball. Named Lightning (what else could I name it?)
When training I can switch between teams, just not when advancing the story. Trained Owls and Lightning up a bit, looking for a STAB move. Found one at level 9.
Sprout Tower is…taking forever…on the roof almost out I finally got a gastly (first encounter. It was that late). Named him Raiders for lack of better options.
Trained Avalanche and Lightning to level 11 for Super Effective STAB moves against Falkner. Switched trained Packers and Spiders to do it until they were level 6. Bellsprout is cute following…Spinerak not so much.
Lightning actually got it at 10. Plan is for Lightning to carry through minions and then the female team of Avalanche and Owls if necessary to fight Falkner.
Avalanche vs Pidgey: Pidgey got off a tackle before falling to Rock Throw. Good, was expecting a Sand Attack.
Avalanche vs Pidgeotto: Gust did 6 damage. Rock Throw hit for half. 2nd turn repeated the same thing, only I got the crit. Pidgeotto fainted. First badge got.
Hey Pendra! Yeah the female team should actually be easy mode through until Jasmine if I can keep them all alive (or really just keep Owls and Avalanche alive. Chickorita line is pretty useless in Johto). I love XY still and Sun and Moon are nice, but I still haven't bothered to pick it back up after the first run. Don't know why. Thanks for commenting!
Got an urgent call from the Prof. Once again I cannot receive a pokémon (or egg in this case) unless I don’t have a full team. Deposited Spiders to receive the egg.
Weird girl said I needed to care for the egg because it was special.
Walked around to hatch the egg as my Violet City encounter.
Training while trying to hatch the egg Packers got knocked out by a rock throw from a level 12 geodude (he was level 9). He had 24/30 left! UGH I LIKE BELLSPROUT LINE!!!!
On top of that after getting an Old Amber fossil at the rock smashed of Ruins of Alph I discovered that there’s no way to revive it (in Kanto)
Pulled out Raiders to replace.
Violet City is…togepi! (gift). Named him Falcons (because of evolution).
Trained Spiders and Raiders up to 11 since I was close when I hatched Falcons.
And that concludes the time I had to play this half-week. Come back Wednesday for the next update!
Darn it, a Bellsprout could have been cool to have, even if it wouldn't have been easy to get Victreebel or any good Grass-type attacks. Gastly isn't gonna be easy to use before Shadow Ball, though (or at the very least, Thunderbolt).
For the question, I really don't feel like answering it. It was one that could have been EASILY prevented. It was the start of a catalyst that literally changed my life and almost put me off from Pokémon entirely. (I think a certain someone here can guess which one I'm talking about.)
